Sandler Center Art Gallery Showcases Gloria Coker’s Fine Art
Newport News artist Gloria Coker’s fluid and vibrant acrylic paintings will be on view at the Sandler Center Art Gallery from Dec. 2 through March 1.
29th Annual Messiah Sing Along at the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts

- We are pleased to present our 29th Annual FREE Messiah Sing Along as our gift to the community. The audience will sing the choruses from the Christmas portion of Messiah. Soloists will be: Anna Sterrett, Soprano; Marilyn Kellam, Mezzo-soprano; Jeffrey Easter, Tenor; and Larry Giddens, Baritone. Music Director and Conductor David S. Kunkel will lead the orchestra. Messiah scores will be on sale in the lobby prior to the concert for $10. Doors to the theater open at 7:15 PM. Singers with scores will be seated on the first floor. Observers may sit in the mezzanine or balcony sections.
- The concert is partially funded through the A.H. Grandy Fund of the Hampton Roads Community Foundation.
December is Request Month for the Williamsburg Regional Library's Thursday Afternoon Film Series with movies specifically requested by regular attendees of the series.
The movies will be shown beginning at 2 p.m. in the Williamsburg Library Theatre, 515 Scotland St. They are free of charge and tickets or reservations are not required. Call the library's Adult Services Division at (757) 259-4050 for more information.
December 1 – High Sierra (1941)
A notorious gangster (Humphrey Bogart) is coerced into participating in a big robbery but finds himself distracted by two very different women. This noirish crime drama, costarring Ida Lupino and Joan Leslie, was written by John Huston and directed by Raoul Walsh. NOTE: Bogart, an ardent animal lover, had one of his own pet dogs playing the role of “Pard” in the film.
December 8 – The Red Shoes (1948)
A talented ballerina is forced to choose between love and her career in dance in this famous film from directors Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. The movie starring Moira Shearer, Anton Walbrook, Marius Goring and Leonide Massine, is renowned for Jack Cardiff’s beautiful Technicolor cinematography.

Bob Hope - Hope for the Holidays
A collection of clips from Bob Hope’s TV Christmas specials from
the 1950s through the 80s. Among the stars featured are Jack
Benny, Red Skelton, Phyllis Diller, Phil Silvers & Redd Foxx.

Musical clips from Andy’s annual TV Christmas shows in the 1960s highlight popular holiday songs sung by Andy, the Williams Brothers and the Osmond Brothers.
December 22 – A Christmas Carol (1951)
In this holiday classic miser Ebenezer Scrooge (Alastair Sim) faces a ghostly intervention on Christmas Eve. Directed by Brian Desmond Hurst this is widely considered to be the best film version of Charles Dickens’ famous tale.
December 29 – Sweethearts (1938)
Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy play a happily married couple who panic their co-stars by threatening to leave their popular Broadway Operetta for a career in Hollywood. This lightweight musical comedy was directed by W.S. Van Dyke from a script co-written by Dorothy Parker with music by Victor Herbert. Jeanette’s gloriously outré costumes were designed by Adrian.
